There are so many groups that have been fighting for human rights throughout America. The rights that they fight for are human rights, migrant rights and civil rights. Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) is one of them.
Founded in 1986, CHIRLA leads in assisting diverse immigrant individuals and families. They act as social agents who aim at changing the world by advocating for freedom and mobility, human rights, and democratic rights. The organization purposes to achieve a society that recognizes immigrants fully.
CHIRLA serves institutions, coalitions, and individuals to build power, change policies, and transform public opinion in achieving human rights, civil, and labor rights. The organization works under the virtues of power and love to the community. These drives them towards achieving the intended progressive social change.
The drive behind the formation of CHIRLA was in response to reforms in immigration and the control ACT in 1986 that made it illegal to hire undocumented workers. This created a situation whereby workers were exploited and abused.
CHIRLA’s role is in civic engagement, community education, offering legal immigration services, policy, and advocacy. Their role in civic engagement includes building an active and educated electorate. They have phone bankers and volunteers that enable them to reach out to thousands of voters in both general and primary elections.
